In 1325 the first member of the "old Holstein noble" von Büren family came to Bremen, where his descendants became prominent members of the patrician society. Rudolf VON BÜREN (who died about 1403) married Wubbeke VON LÜNEBURG, daughter of Nicolaus LÜNEBURG. Their son Reinecke married Gesa SCHARHAAR, daughter of Bremen mayor Diederich SCHARHAAR. Their son Hermann became a Bremen city councilman in 1438. Reinecke died about 1450. Herman and his wife, Meta VON GRÖPELINGEN's son Hermann also a Bremen city councilman, was married to Gretje BRAND, daughter of city councilman and "squire" Daniel BRAND the elder.
Herman and Gretje's son, Daniel VON BÜREN (the elder), was elected to the Bremen city council Dec. 4, 1486, and was elected mayor in 1500. His journal from 1496-1525 is in the Bremen archive. In 1503 he bought indulgences from Cardinal Raimund for himself and his family, as was the custom, but the sight of the money being sent to Rome led him, as mayor, to see that some was held back and used for the city. Later, in 1522, he was responsible for Heinrich von Züphen's becoming the first protestant preacher in Bremen, and was considered a skillful Bürgermeister (for over 50 years). He and his second wife, Metta SPARENBERG, had at least three children: Wubke, born about 1500, Daniel, born in 1512, and Becka, born in 1525. He was best know for his part in the 1532 "Revolt of the 104 Men." (Palm Sunday, 1532, citizens angry with the Dom chapter overpowered the Rat and desecrated the Catholic symbols -- the Rat did not support them, worried about the reaction of the Kaiser and Empire.) According to one account 3 , Daniel VON BÜREN, the oldest of the mayors, that evening walked out through the Heerdentor with his small daughter (7-year-old Becka?) and his housekeeper (in house dress and slippers in order not to arouse suspicion), sent the others back, mounted a horse on the other side of the Pagenthurm, and rode through the night to Achim and with a son waiting for him there (20-year-old Daniel?, who had been a student at the University of Wittenberg, sat at the feet of Luther and studied under Melancthon) further to Ottersberg, where the Rat's secretary Jacob Loewe joined him. After a rest day, they rode from there to Bederkesa, where they joined other members of the council. When the council later returned to Bremen, Daniel von Büren asked the citizens gathered at the Markt if they wanted to remain by "Tafel und Buch" (The Commandments and the Book). They did, and Catholicism was not restored. When Daniel von Büren the elder retired in 1538, his son Daniel the younger was elected to replace him. Daniel the elder died April 4, 1541. The Dom remained closed until 1547, when Albert Hardenberg became the Protestant preacher there.
Daniel the younger, like his father, served the city for more than half a century. He had studied law and theology at Wittenberg and Heidelberg and was known as a sharp and indepedent thinker, skilled diplomat, and impressive speaker. During the Hardenburg unrest (1555-66), he was the leader of the Calvinist Hardenburg supporters. The Lutheran majority of the Rat left the city in protest in 1562 when von Büren's turn came again to be sitting mayor. (The city had three mayors at a time, who rotated active service.) After a bitter 5-year struggle during which Bremen was ousted from the Hanseatic League, most returned (as private citizens), swore oaths to the Rat that had replaced them, and Bremen remained Calvinist, rejoining the Hanseatic League in 1576. Daniel's younger sister Becka's husband, Cord KENKEL, was an avid supporter of Daniel during the Hardenburg unrest, and was one of the people elected to the Rat to replace those (led by his cousin, mayor Detmar Kenkel) who had left in protest.
